 Countertops are of utmost importance in both the function and appearance of your kitchen.  Although it can be a major undertaking, depending on the surface selected, you will typically get your investment back when it comes time to sell, provided the install is done properly. This is one of those projects where it might pay off to hire a professional. Depending on the surface, it can be very heavy and tough to mobilize. When using a pro, they come out and take measurements and or create a template prior to the install, so there are no surprises. Also, if it cracks, chips or scratches during install, the professional is responsible. That is not to say you can’t do it yourself though. Just take extra care!
